Philips 4K TV not showing HDR with Xbox One X (Gaming - Microsoft)

by TrinityInfinity, Friday, November 16, 2018, 15:51 (25 days ago)

Not sure what's going on but I just got a new Philips 4K tv, it's supposed to support HDR10. I fired up the Insects app and the only thing I can toggle is the 4K setting, the HDR setting is greyed out :-think

I have the video output on the Xbox set to 4K - allow 4K and allow HDR10 boxes are ticked

I don't see any other settings to change in the tv

Any help?

So I am not sure what exact model you have but I can only tell you what I did on my Philips to get hdr working with Xbox One X.

On the Philips go to settings then all settings
Choose general settings
Choose input sources
Choose the hdmi input number that your Xbox One X is on
Choose hdmi ultra hd
You then have three choices: standard, optimal and off. Choose optimal

On the Xbox One X go to settings
Choose display and sound
Choose video output
Make sure display is showing 4K UHD
Then on the same page choose video modes and make sure allow 4K, allow HDR10 and allow YCC 4:2:2 have a tick in their boxes

Doing this got the HDR working on my setup. Hope this helps you in some way.

Also just a side note that you may have missed but I've noticed many of the Philips TV's only play 4K 30hz on the hdmi 1 input

From their website on some of their product pages

Video inputs on HDMI 1
up to 4K UHD 3840x2160@30 Hz
Video inputs on HDMI 2/3
up to 4K UHD 3840x2160@60 Hz

So you really want to plug your Xbox One X into hdmi port 2 or 3 as this will take full advantage of 4K 60fps games.

My knowledge on 4K and hdr is not at all very good but have a look at this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/xboxone/comments/7cy2hs/xbox_one_x_and_ycc_422/ regarding ycc4:2:2

somebody quotes

"Amended my original answer, as it seems 4:4:4 is ok on 8-bit HDR but not 10-bit or higher, due to current bandwidth limitations in HDMI. So the real answer is, if you want to use X1X on a 10-bit or higher panel, you want to enable 4:2:2."

and a quoted reply to this was

"All these formats are pretty much a joke at this point.... Non-compressed color information works on the screens with less capacity (8bit), and the screens that can display more colors with better information (10bit HDR) have to do it with compressed information due to bandwidth limits of the connecting cable.... It's all one big stupid joke... And consumers are the punchline..."

So it seems that newer hdr10 panels need to tick the ycc4:2:2 box whereas older hdr tv's don't :-think

Don't really get all this either. Certain people say even though you have a tv with hdr10 you should choose 8 bit color depth in the settings and not 10 or 12 bit that way sdr still looks better and the xbox will automatically switch to 10 bit when it detects that content. Then other people say no it's best to set it to 10 bit if you have a 10 bit panel which you would think makes sense.
