"But this strange — and deeply unpleasant — exercise is all in aid of a TV series, SAS: Who Dares Wins, which shows what happens when 25 ordinary civilians are forced to endure the same punishing challenges as its elite recruits, and said to be as close to the real thing as possible.

While there may only be men featured on the show, the third series of which starts tomorrow night, that could all be about to change — and in real life, too.

Last month, it was reported that the SAS is considering changing its selection process to make it easier for women. Though technically there is no ban on the fairer sex, traditionally it — like many others in the Armed Forces — has been a male-only regiment.
